The Zona Maco Contemporary Art Fair returns in person this 2022 at the Citibanamex Center located in Mexico City, after two years of testing hybrid and remote formats due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Zona Maco was founded in 2002 by Zélika García with four events that take place annually at Centro Citibanamex in CDMX. The four contests are Zona Maco México Arte Contemporáneo, bringing together leading and emerging national and international art galleries.
On this occasion Juan Canela, was appointed as artistic director of Zona Maco 2022, in a past interview with the media he explained that after the uncertainty due to the COVID-19 pandemic, work was carried out on this project with the proper sanitary measures, to continue supporting the promotion of art in Mexico.
“It is an edition in which the main objective is to understand the essence and the main values of the existence of a fair like Zona Maco. It was important to look for the best circumstances and opportunities to return to the meeting,” said the creative director for EFE.
In order to access, Juan Canela expressed that attendees will have to bring their vaccination certificate or a negative coronavirus test no longer than 24 hours. It should be noted that within the exhibition COVID-19 tests can be done at affordable prices.

The 42-year-old director was in charge of renewing the curatorial part of the fair, which will bring together more than 200 international and national exhibitors from 25 countries at the Citibanamex center, from February 9 to 13, 2022.
The Contemporary Art Fair has four specialized sections such as the General Section, South, Modern Art, Axes, the latter led by the Cuban curator, Direlia Lazo.
In the South section, curated for the first time by the Brazilian Luiza Teixeira de Freitas, themes far removed from the pandemic and disease, such as fantasy and the surreal, as well as the encounter of art with nature, will be explored.
The Modern Art section was prepared by the Mexican Esteban King and in this space works by established artists such as Rufino Tamayo, Leonora Carrington, Manuel Felguérez, Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco, María Izquierdo will be exhibited.
On the other hand, there is a section divided into three fairs; Zona Maco Diseño, which presents furniture, jewelry, textiles, limited editions and decorative objects; Zona Maco Salon that exhibits antiques and Zona Maco Foto focused on old, modern and contemporary photography since 2015.
Zona Maco Diseño was directed by the industrial designer who has been curating the section for years, Cecilia León de la Barra, which will have new talents in its 2022 edition and which still do not have many works to be exhibited.
For his part, the Mexican historian and director since 2004 of the Soumaya Museum, Alfonso Miranda Márquez, was in charge of Zona Maco Salón, which will reflect on everyday objects with the exhibition of the main collections of the country.
Finally, Zona Maco Foto, under the direction of the curator and historian from the Dominican Republic, Sara Hermann, who will show a different critique of the image based on the works of Joan Fontcuberta, Graciela Iturbide and Felipe Lavin.
